There are many ways in which you can help keep your boiler in tip-top condition, running smoothly and effectively, some of which are covered below:

1. Turning it for a short period every month is a clever way to keep it running smoothly. Just 10-20 minutes a month will help keep the internals and moving parts functioning correctly. Parts such as the pump may become seized over time, resulting in a costly part replacement and repair bill so keeping them supply by small usage every month will help in the long run.

2. Getting cover which involves a boiler service every 12 months. Cover plans can be as little as £15 per month, which when compared against the likely cost of a boiler breakdown works out as very good value.

3. Getting an annual boiler service. Not to be confused with a ‘check’ which are often very expensive, and of little use really, a service will check your boiler is running effectively and efficiently. There will be a number of in-depth tests that will check both the functionality and the safety of the parts and emissions. So to avoid becoming part of the boiler-breakdown statistics, you should seriously consider getting a boiler-service every year. The money spent can be worthwhile as the cost of boiler repair, or in worst case scenarios boiler replacement can be astronomical, and tempting as it might be, you should never attempt a boiler service by yourself. One mistake could be deadly.
